Serbian Opposition Blocks Court in Novi Sad Over Station Disaster

Opposition politicians in Novi Sad blocked court entrances, demanding accountability for the November 1 railway station canopy collapse that killed 15 people. They also called for the release of protesters detained after the tragedy. Clashes with riot police led to accusations of excessive force.

Protesters criticized the lack of arrests or updates on the investigation. Opposition MP Milan Turanjanin said the blockade aimed to pressure authorities to act and provide justice. The death toll rose to 15 after a severely injured victim recently died.

Infrastructure Minister Goran Vesic resigned but denied responsibility. Despite 66 interviews conducted, no arrests have been made, and seven protesters remain in custody, intensifying public frustration.

Demonstrations have included marches, vigils, and road blockades, with calls for the resignations of Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric and Prime Minister Milos Vucevic. Protesters also demanded transparency about the station’s reconstruction.

The 2022-renovated station, touted as meeting “European standards,” has faced scrutiny due to classified contracts, raising concerns over safety compliance and oversight.
