Serbia’s Trade Minister Tomislav Momirovic resigned on Wednesday, becoming the latest political figure to step down following the deadly Novi Sad train station disaster on November 1, which claimed 15 lives. Momirovic previously served as Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Minister during the station’s reconstruction from 2020 to 2022.
In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, Momirovic expressed gratitude to President Aleksandar Vucic for his trust, stating, “I am always here for him and for Serbia.” His resignation follows that of Infrastructure Minister Goran Vesic, who offered to step down earlier but whose resignation has yet to be formalized by parliament.
The disaster, involving the collapse of an outdoor canopy at Novi Sad station, has sparked widespread protests and demands for accountability. Despite investigations and questioning of dozens of individuals, no arrests have been made. Protesters have also criticized authorities for detaining demonstrators rather than addressing the causes of the tragedy.
The renovation of Novi Sad station, part of a Chinese-led project to modernize Serbia’s railways, began in 2021 and was declared complete in July 2024. However, concerns have arisen over the quality and oversight of the work, with local reports indicating that renovation documentation has been classified as confidential.
Momirovic, who transitioned from running his family’s business empire, Mona, to government service, had previously faced criticism for controversial remarks, including suggesting that “a meal of two eggs” was sufficient sustenance for a day. His political career has been closely linked to President Vucic, who once praised him as a capable negotiator despite polarizing views.
