Turkey, after the start of using gas from the Sakarya field in the Black Sea, will continue to buy gas, including from Russia. This was announced in an interview with a TASS correspondent by the Director General of the Turkish Oil Company Melih Khan Bilgin.
He noted that 99.5% of natural gas needs are met through supplies from abroad. At the same time, according to him, own gas will bring balance in this matter. “In any case, I am sure that Turkey will both buy and sell gas,” Bilgin said. He admitted that gas production in his country would allow Turkey to discuss with other states the provision of discounts on gas.
Bilgin noted that the Sakarya field will be used in a gas hub in Turkey. According to him, 40 million cubic meters will be produced there. m of gas every day.
In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to create a gas hub in Turkey for supplies to Europe, if potential buyers are interested. In January, Türkiye started work on the gas center project proposed by Moscow.
In early April, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez said that the Turkish government had adopted the first legislative decisions that should simplify the work of oil and gas companies within the gas hub. He noted that the republic is striving to become a center for gas trade, which will eventually be sold to European countries.
The Sakarya field was discovered in 2020. It is located in the Black Sea, 155 km from the coast of Turkey near the port of Filyos. The reserves of the field are estimated at 540 billion cubic meters
